MA boys lose season/home opener 58-51

MA's Riley Cobern goes in for 2 points early in tonight's game against Central.

December 7 -  Tonight's season opener didn't end well for Coach Ryan's Lynx as they lost to Central 58-51 at home. The Lynx led all through the first half, although not by much - 14-7 after the first period and 25-21 at halftime. The Red Devils game out after the break to go ahead by as much as 8 in the third and led 44-38 going into the final period. Central held on to win by 7 when it was all said and done. Trysten Pelkey had 18 for the Lynx. This was the first win by the Central boys since January 10, 2010! The MA JVs defeated Central 51-25.

The boys will be back in action, at home, Monday evening against Orono. To view our action photos from tonight's game CLICK HERE.

MA Bleacher Creatures to add to atmosphere at games again this year

December 4 - The "Bleacher Creatures" under the direction of Trevor Marcho will once again be playing at many of the Mattanawcook Academy home basketball games this winter. According to M.A. Athletic Director Rick Meyers, the "Creatures" will be playing at 10 of the 16 home games through out the season - 5 boys' and 5 girls' games:

12/10 Monday Boys v.s. Orono 7:00pm

12/14 Friday Girls vs Calais 6:30pm

12/18 Tuesday Boys vs Schenck 7:00pm

12/19 Wednesday Girls vs Lee 7:00pm

1/10 Thursday Girls vs Schenck 7:00pm

1/12 Saturday Boys vs Calais 3:30pm

1/19 Saturday Boys vs Lee 7:00pm

1/26 Saturday Boys & Girls vs Searsport 1:00pm

2/7 Thursday Girls vs Houlton 7:00pm

They really add to the atmosphere at the games in our opinion, and we're glad to see they'll be back.

New this season is some halftime entertainment initiated by Myers this year. If you've been to either of the pre-season games at M.A. this fall, then you've seen a preview. Besides the $1 50/50 raffles, there is now a "$1 Shoot For The Loot" with prizes for foul shots, 3-point shots, and shots from half-court!

Looks like an exciting winter of basketball at the high school in many ways! As usual, we'll be covering every home game for your Lincoln area website WelcomeToLincolnMaine.com.

The first home boys' game will be Friday, December 7th as Central makes a visit to Lincoln. The first girls' home game will be against Calais on Friday the 14th. We encourage you to come to the games and support our area athletes. Last season both teams provided a lot of excitement and both ended up in the Eastern Maine Tournament in Bangor last February!

MA boys lose to Hermon in preseason game

Mattanawcook Academy Co-Captain Trysten Pelkey goes to the basket against Hermon Tuesday night.

December 4 - The Class B Hermon Hawks and the MA Lynx boys played JV and varsity preseason games at the MA gym tonight, with the Hawks prevailing in both games. There was a fairly large crowd on hand, and halftime entertainment was an interesting foul-shooting competition.

The first regular season game for the Lynx will be at home this Friday night against Central. Come to the game and support our team! We'll be there to bring you plenty of action photos. CLICK HERE for a slideshow of photos from tonight's game.

MA's Morgan Russell on all-state field hockey team

MA senior Morgan Russell with M.A. field hockey coach Dean Libby today.

December 2 - M.A. senior Morgan Russell was recognized for her outstanding season and high school career today at the Augusta Civic Center, where the 2012 All State Field Hockey Team was honored. Mattanawcook Academy coach Dean Libbey gave Morgan a wonderful introduction, and made the trip with his wife Gina in the snow, sleet and rain to be there for her. Congratulations on a great high school career!

MA Boys' JV and varsity teams battle Old Town

November 28 - The scrappy MA Lynx varsity and JV boys tried hard in tonight's preseason games, but both lost to the visiting Old Town boys. A good crowd was on hand though, to cheer them on.

M.A. junior Katelyn Trask sang the Star-Spangled Banner, and MA Athletic Director Rick Meyers arranged some halftime entertainment as fans had a chance to shoot some baskets to benefit the Athletic Boosters. Meyers promises that there will be fun events at halftime throughout the season. The Bleacher Creatures pep band will return this year to add some spirit to the home games.

We hope you'll join us at the MA gym throughout the basketball season to support our young athletes. For a photo slideshow from tonight's games, CLICK HERE.

MA Lynx split pre-season openers

November 23 - A good mixture of family, friends and fans was on hand this morning at the Bangor Auditorium as the Mattanawcoo, Academy boys' and girls' basketball teams played their first pre-season games against John Bapst. The girls won the first game 34-24 as senior Taylor Blood sat out with back problems (not serious, we were told) as a precaution. The boys, who graduated a lot of seniors after last season were quite scrappy as they lost 29-21. Both games were low-scoring affairs.

In the day's second series of games it was the MA girls 38 Dexter 28 and Dexter 63 MA boys  52. The boys' varsity and JV teams host the Old Town teams (formerly known as the Indians) on Wednesday. The Old Town boys are coached by former M.A. girls' varsity coach Brian McDormand. The Lady Lynx will be at Lee Academy next Friday afternoon and evening.
